Humulin R is the brand name for a medication that contains regular insulin, which is a short-acting insulin. Insulin is a hormone produced in the pancreas that helps lower blood sugar levels. This prescription medication is administered through injection to aid in blood sugar management for adults with diabetes. Humulin R is classified as a short-acting insulin that begins to take effect within 30 minutes after administration, reaches its peak effect in 2 to 3 hours, and continues to work for up to 8 hours.
Humulin R is indicated for enhancing blood sugar control in both adults and children with diabetes mellitus. It can be used for patients with either type 1 or type 2 diabetes. This medication should not be used if you have an allergy to insulin or during an episode of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar).
Humulin R is not approved for individuals younger than 2 years old and is not recommended for treating type 2 diabetes in children of any age.
To ensure that insulin is safe for you, inform your doctor if you have any liver or kidney conditions or if you have low potassium levels in your blood (hypokalemia).
Notify your doctor if you are using pioglitazone or rosiglitazone (which may be included in combinations with glimepiride or metformin). The combination of certain oral diabetes medications and insulin may increase the risk of serious heart issues.
Adhere to your doctor's guidelines regarding insulin usage if you are pregnant or nursing. Maintaining effective blood sugar control is crucial during pregnancy, and your dosage needs may vary throughout each trimester. Your dosage requirements may also differ while breast-feeding.
Store Humulin R in its original container, ensuring it is shielded from heat and light. Do not draw insulin from a vial into a syringe until you are prepared for an injection. Avoid freezing the insulin or keeping it near the cooling element within a refrigerator. Dispose of any insulin that has been frozen.
For unopened (not in use) Humulin R: refrigerate it and use it before the expiration date, or keep it at room temperature for up to 42 days. Do not use the medication if it appears cloudy, has changed color, or contains any particles. Contact your pharmacist for a replacement if needed.
Potential side effects include: redness or swelling at the injection site, widespread itchy rash, difficulty breathing, rapid heartbeat, feeling faint, or swelling of the tongue or throat.
